Ketamine is not currently FDA-approved to treat depression or anxiety. It is a prescription anesthetic that can be prescribed off-label to treat depression, anxiety, and other mental-health related disorders.
Side effects of ketamine treatment may include:
nausea
vomiting
blurred vision
an altered sense of time or space
dry mouth
elevated blood pressure or heart rate
loss of appetite
anxiety
diminished senses
slurred speech
excitability
confusion
rapid eye movements
restlessness
These side effects are usually mild and subside within 2-3 hours. Lasting adverse side effects are rare when ketamine is taken appropriately under medical supervision.
In rare cases, frequent users have reported increased urination, urinary incontinence, pain urinating, passing blood in the urine, or reduced bladder size.
You should not take ketamine if you:
are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or are nursing
have a history of psychosis or mania
have uncontrolled blood pressure, serious heart problems, or breathing problems
are allergic to ketamine
have a history of elevated intraocular or intracranial pressure, hyperthyroidism, or other serious medical conditions
Ketamine may worsen problems in those with schizophrenia, severe personality disorders, or other serious mental health disorders. Users with a personal or family history of psychosis should be cautious using any psychoactive substance.
There is no evidence that ketamine is physically addictive, but it has been shown to cause moderate psychological dependency in some recreational users.
The dissociative effects of ketamine may increase the risk of accidents. To ensure safety, follow these treatment guidelines:
Do not take benzodiazepines or stimulants for 24 hours prior to your treatment.
Continue to take antihypertensive medication as prescribed.
Avoid alcohol intake before and after your treatment.
Do not consume solid foods within 3 hours prior to treatment. Do not consume liquids within 1 hour prior to treatment.
Do not operate a motor vehicle or heavy machinery following your treatment. You should wait until you’ve had a full night of sleep.
Only use ketamine under the supervision of a monitor or guide.
